ARCHETYPAL NARRATIVE COURSE FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
4 Months - Choaching Session (twice a week)
What makes a great picture? What makes a picture award-winning? There may be no definitive and simple answer to these questions. However, we can more easily recognize a great picture when we see it. At least in photojournalism or marketing communication context, great pictures are those which engage their audience, awaken strong feeling and even move them.
Michele McNally, chair of the 2007 jury of World Press Photo eloquently describe great pictures as those that “… have an aesthetic component, drawing in the viewer, urging them to learn more about the story the picture is telling.” McNally is saying that behind great pictures are great stories. They are not only those that involve great people. They are more often the narratives of ordinary people. They may be mundane, but they are always perennial stories that remind us about our humanity.
The archetypal narrative course for photojournalist aims to draw attention more to story elements of pictures. It is less about making pictures that are nice-looking aesthetically. It is more about pictures that engage and move audience through stories.
The course will cover topics as follows:
1. Story-telling: violating the taken-for-granted world of people
2. Archetypal narrative: mundane myth of ordinary people
3. Visual semiotic: finding meaningful visual elements of your picture
4. Ethnography: researching days in life of people
5. Planning your visual story
Besides lectures and discussions, more hours will be spent on case studies, field assignments and reading assignments.
